We Are NTC | Neath Taxi Cabs | History of Neath
Neath (Welsh: Castell-nedd) is a vibrant market town and community located within the Neath Port Talbot County Borough in Wales. As of the 2011 census, the town boasted a population of 50,658, while the parish community recorded a population of 19,258. Historically part of Glamorgan, Neath nestles along the River Neath, positioned approximately seven miles (eleven kilometres) east-northeast of Swansea.
The English name “Neath” finds its origins in “Nedd,” the ancient Welsh name for the River Neath. This nomenclature is believed to be either Celtic or Pre-Celtic in origin. The name has been suggested to mean ‘shining’ or ‘brilliant,’ and may also be linked to the older Indo-European root *-nedi, which simply translates to ‘river.’ Consequently, Neath might share its etymological roots with the town of Stratton in Cornwall and the River Nidd in Northern England.

We Are NTC | Neath Taxi Cabs | Roman Fort
Strategically situated at a ford of the River Neath, the town’s importance was evident even in ancient times, as demonstrated by numerous Celtic hill forts encircling the area. Recognising its strategic significance, the Romans constructed an Auxiliary Fort on the western bank of the river around 74 AD. Although much of this site is now within the grounds of Dwr-y-Felin Comprehensive School, archaeological excavations have unearthed unique features such as gate towers extending beyond the fort’s walls and a vast Roman marching camp that could house thousands of soldiers.
These discoveries highlight the extraordinary measures the Romans undertook during their encounters with the indigenous Silures. The fort was vacated around 125 AD for fifteen years and again around 170 AD for nearly a century before the Romans finally withdrew around 320 AD.
The Antonine Itinerary, dating back to the 2nd century, lists Nido (or Nidum) as one of the nine notable locations in Roman Wales.

Neath Castle.
The area was visited by St Illtyd, who founded a settlement in what is now known as Llantwit, situated on the northern fringe of the town. The Church of St Illtyd was established at this site and subsequently expanded during Norman times.
Remarkably, the structure remains intact and functional to this day within the Church in Wales. The Welsh name for Neath, Castell-nedd, refers to the Norman Neath Castle, a site visited by English monarchs Henry II, John, and Edward I.

We Are NTC | Neath Taxi Cabs | Industrial and Modern Neath
Initially a market town, Neath experienced significant growth with the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, driven by burgeoning industries such as iron, steel, and tinplate manufacturing. The Mackworth family, owners of the Gnoll Estate, played a pivotal role in the town’s industrial expansion. The surrounding valleys were rich in coal, and the development of canals and railways transformed Neath into a major transportation hub. The Evans and Bevan families were prominent figures in the local coal mining sector and also owned the Vale of Neath Brewery.
Additionally, silica was mined in the Craig-y-Dinas area of Pontneddfechan, following Quaker entrepreneur William Weston Young’s invention of the blast furnace silica firebrick. Production later shifted from Pontwalby to the Green in Neath. The town remained a centre for market trading, featuring a municipal cattle market operated by W.B. Trick. Industrial progress continued into the 20th century with BP’s construction of a petroleum refinery at Llandarcy.
Admiral Lord Nelson stayed at the Castle Hotel en route to Milford Haven when the fleet was anchored there. Lt. Lewis Roatley, the landlord’s son, served as a Royal Marines officer with Nelson aboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar.
The River Neath, once a navigable estuary, rendered Neath a bustling river port in earlier times. Although heavy industries have declined, the town has reinvented itself as a commercial and tourism hub. Notable attractions include the ruins of the Cistercian Neath Abbey, Gnoll Park, and Neath Indoor Market.
Neath has had the honour of hosting the National Eisteddfod of Wales in the years 1918, 1934, and 1994.
